About Us

Dr Jochen Clemens

Adv Clin Cert Skin Cancer Medicine and Surgery, Adv Clin Cert Dermoscopy, FRNZCGP

Following my Graduation in Germany, 1996, I worked as a GP in the UK, obtaining the JCTPGP. In 2008 I immigrated to New Zealand, where I obtained the FRNZCGP and worked as a specialist GP at Gore Medical Centre.

I have always been interested in skin cancer medicine and surgery and started to work as a GPSI for minor surgery when it was first established. Since then I have expanded my knowledge and skills and obtained the advanced skin cancer and dermoscopy certificates from the SCCA (Skin Cancer College Australasia). I am an accredited skin cancer doctor since 2019 and member of the SCCA and NZSCD (New Zealand Skin Cancer Doctors Society). Since the launch of the WellSouth GPSI skin lesion excision program in 2021 I have worked as one their 3 triaging doctors. My main interest is early diagnosis and surgical management of skin lesions and I particularly enjoy the practical aspects, including flaps and grafts. Another surgical interest of mine is vasectomy, which I have been performing for the last 5 years.

I am married with one son (now a dental student at Otago) and live with my wife and two dogs. In my spare time I enjoy the outdoors, hunting and fishing, walks with our dogs and fly tying.

Dr Jeremy Maarschalk

BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCSEd, Adv Clin Cert Dermoscopy, FRNZCGP

Originally from Zimbabwe, I graduated from Newcastle University Medical School in the UK in 2013, then went on to work and train primarily in surgical specialties for the next 6 years, both in the UK and in New Zealand, with most of my time spent working in plastic and reconstructive surgery. I moved into general practice in 2019, completing the vocational training programme in 2022.

With my background in plastic and reconstructive surgery I have always had a keen interest in skin cancer medicine and surgery, and carry out a wide variety of procedures under local anaesthetic, including complex flap and graft reconstructions. I also perform surgical procedures for non-cancer-related problems, including benign skin lesion removal, minor hand surgery (including carpal tunnel surgery and trigger finger releases), and toenail procedures.

I am a member of the Skin Cancer College Australasia and the New Zealand Skin Cancer Doctors Society, and am a registered GP with Special Interest (GPSI) in skin cancer surgery for the WellSouth Primary Health Network.

Outside of work I love spending time with my wife and four young children, particularly in outdoor pursuits. Another passion of mine is supporting healthcare in developing-world contexts.
